The 4 Series Convertible’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The GranCabrio doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

The BMW 4 Series Convertible has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags help prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The GranCabrio doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The 4 Series Convertible has standard front and rear seat tall, head-protecting side-impact airbags, which act as a forgiving barrier between the passengers and the door. Combined with high-strength steel door beams this system increases protection from broadside collisions. The GranCabrio doesn't offer rear-seat side-impact airbags, only ones for front seat occupants.

The 4 Series Convertible has a standard PostCrash iBrake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The GranCabrio doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

The 4 Series Convertible’s standard lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane. A lane departure warning system costs extra on the GranCabrio.

The 4 Series Convertible has a standard blind spot warning system that uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them and moves the vehicle back into its lane. A system to reveal vehicles in the GranCabrio’s blind spot costs extra.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the 4 Series Convertible has standard Cross Traffic Warning, helping the driver avoid collisions. Maserati charges extra for Rear Cross Path on the GranCabrio.

Both the 4 Series Convertible and the GranCabrio have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available all wheel drive and around view monitors.

The 4 Series Convertible’s corrosion warranty is 8 years and unlimited miles longer than the GranCabrio’s (12/unlimited vs. 4/50,000).

BMW pays for scheduled maintenance on the 4 Series Convertible for 3 years and 36,000 miles. BMW will pay for oil changes, tire rotations, air filter replacements, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Maserati doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the GranCabrio.

There are almost 4 times as many BMW dealers as there are Maserati dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the 4 Series Convertible’s warranty.

The M440i Convertible’s standard 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder hybrid produces 37 lbs.-ft. more torque (398 vs. 361) than the GranCabrio’s standard 3.0 turbo V6.

On the EPA test cycle the 4 Series Convertible gets better mileage than the GranCabrio:

Regenerative brakes improve the 4 Series Convertible’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The GranCabrio doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the BMW 4 Series Convertible uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended for maximum performance). The GranCabrio requires premium, which can cost on average about 84.9 cents more per gallon.

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires standard on the 4 Series Convertible can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. The GranCabrio doesn’t offer run-flat tires.

For better maneuverability, the 4 Series Convertible’s turning circle is 3.3 feet tighter than the GranCabrio’s (37.4 feet vs. 40.7 feet). The 4 Series Convertible xDrive’s turning circle is 1.3 feet tighter than the GranCabrio’s (39.4 feet vs. 40.7 feet).

The BMW 4 Series Convertible may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 50 to 300 pounds less than the Maserati GranCabrio.

The 4 Series Convertible is 7.6 inches shorter than the GranCabrio, making the 4 Series Convertible easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The 4 Series Convertible has a much larger trunk with its top down than the GranCabrio with its top down (10.6 vs. 4.6 cubic feet). The 4 Series Convertible has a much larger trunk with its top up than the GranCabrio with its top up (13.6 vs. 6.1 cubic feet).

The 4 Series Convertible’s standard rear seats fold to accommodate long and bulky cargo. The GranCabrio doesn’t offer folding rear seats.

With its convertible body style, valet key, locking rear seatbacks and remote trunk release lockout, the 4 Series offers cargo security. The GranCabrio’s non-lockable remote release defeats cargo security.

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier, especially for short adults, the 4 Series Convertible offers an optional power trunk, which opens and closes automatically by pressing a button, or optionally by just waving your foot, completely leaving your hands free. The GranCabrio doesn’t offer a power trunk.

If the windows are left open on the 4 Series Convertible the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the GranCabrio can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

In case of a sudden change of weather, the 4 Series Convertible offers an optional remote convertible top that can be raised from a distance to protect the interior of the vehicle from damage. On a hot day the 4 Series Convertible offers an optional remote opening feature, to lower the top from outside. The GranCabrio doesn’t offer a remote top, so the driver will have to run to the car, get in, turn the ignition on and raise the top to prevent the interior from being damaged.

The 4 Series Convertible’s optional Parking Assistant Plus can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The GranCabrio doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

The BMW 4 Series comes in coupe, convertible and four door hatchback bodystyles; the Maserati GranCabrio isn’t available as a coupe or four door.

The 4 Series Convertible is available in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. The GranCabrio doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.
